Learning Disabilities Centre

Since its foundation in June 2013, the centre for learning disabilities at Prayaas has been committed to the pursuit of spreading awareness, sensitizing teachers and parents and providing intervention to help children with learning disabilities to make academic progression.

Admissions are open at the centre for the following types of learning Disabilities

  • Dyslexia
  • Dyscalculia
  • Dyspraxia
  • Dysgraphia
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Facilities provided

  • I.Q. testing & other psychological assessment by certified clinical psychologist
  • Detailed assessment and identification of specific learning problem
  • Individual educational plan to suit the needs of the child
  • Intervention and remedial strategies pertaining to specific learning problem
  • Comprehensive evaluation of other related disabilities in the field of OT & PT

The work of the Centre recognises children’s rights to life, self-determination and equality of opportunity to achieve academic pursuits. It seeks to promote the welfare of children with learning disabilities and their families.

Achievements

  • The centre has collaborated with Sarv Sikhsha Abhiyan (SSA) to perform a pilot study at Government Schools across Chandigarh to identify children with learning disabilities
  • A workshop was organized at PRAYAAS, on 29th and 30th August 2013 for Government School teachers to sensitize them about learning disabilities. The speakers of the seminar were distinguished personalities whose experience in the field of special education and child psychology is extremely commendable. The workshop was a highly enriching experience for the participants as they benefited from the knowledge and subject expertise of our distinguished panel of speakers.
  • A series of visits were scheduled for the team of special educators from PRAYAAS, to deliver remedial measures focusing on adaptive teaching methods, curriculum modification techniques and assessment strategies for teachers to deal with children with learning problems in an inclusive setting.
  • 26 children have From Snehalaya, Maloya have been tested for Learning disabilities and 9 of them have been visiting the centre to receive remedial measures to make scholastic improvement.
  • Workshop conducted for Anganwadi teachers at Bal Bhawan on ‘Importance of early identification of learning disabilities’.
  • Workshop on learning disabilities, Cognitive Skills Training Program and Brain Gym conducted on 24th and 25th April 2014. The objective of the workshop was to sensitize the participants about various different learning disabilities, intervention strategies to build up student’s cognitive skills and brain gym activities.


Recognising the growing prevalence rate of children with learning disabilities and interest of parents as well as teachers, the learning disability centre at prayaas has been conducting workshops on regular basis, as we not only belief in spreading the word of learning disabilities but also in early identification and diagnosis. As early the intervention greater would be the chances of children to enhance their academic skills.
